Movember at Medplus
Nov. 2, 2017
Of all the annual medical events on the calendar, the team at Medplus really get behind Movember.
Men, especially Kiwi men, are very bad at accessing healthcare and getting regular check-ups. Often, they wait until something is seriously wrong before seeking help. Perhaps this is why men die on average 6 years earlier than women. We want to change this and this is why we support Movember so strongly.
Well man checks are important, and we think they can be lifesaving. During a well man check we will be looking for risk factors for heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancers. An examination will be completed, and also investigations will be arranged depending on individual requirements. A prostate check is only a small part of it!
We have sent out thousands of email invitations to all of our patients aged between 40 to 65 years inviting them in for a well man check, and will do this every October. We apologise to those who have already taken the initiative in the last 12 months, but hope you will understand we are just trying to reach those who have not. Despite the invitation, many men will procrastinate or dismiss the idea entirely. So, to all those wives, girlfriends, mothers, sisters, daughters and friends reading this, get the special men in your life to come in and get a well man check this Movember.
A well man check is very hard to cram into a 15-minute appointment, but we are prepared to give it a go, after realising booking a 30-minute appointment was a barrier to some men coming in at all. However, please help us be efficient with our time, and come in slightly early so you can complete a well man questionnaire at reception prior to seeing the doctor. Do by all means book a double if you realise there are many issues to get through.
