Had a COVID test? Read here to understand what you can do whilst you wait for results and when they are back
Aug. 23, 2021
What can you do whilst you are waiting for your test result?
Unless you are having a routine employment COVID swab (as staff in medical centers do) you need to stay at home until your result is back.
Your COVID-19 test result is negative. What happens next?
Ensure that you check your situation below. People advised to stay at home while awaiting test results may not be able to return to daily life, even if their test is negative. For example, those who have symptoms, or who have been in contact with a case may need to stay at home longer.
If you have a negative result, but you develop symptoms of COVID-19 later, please stay at home and ring Healthline (0800 358 5453) for advice. You may still have COVID-19 if you have been tested too early or too late in your illness, as the test may not have been picked up the virus.
If you had a test because you were symptomatic
Stay at home until you have been symptom free for more than 24 hours, so you do not pass your illness on to others. Contact us if you are not improving – you may need further testing or assessment.
If you had been to a location of interest at the time specified
You will need to complete your 14 day self-isolation. Remember to get tested on day 5 and day 12.
If you had no symptoms, and had not been to a location of interest
You may return to normal life
