Avoiding the busy times and thank you for your patience and understanding during the school holidays
Aug. 1, 2017
We always have many appointments available to be booked on the day, although seasonally they are in much higher demand in winter than summer.
However, if you have the luxury of time and choice, there are some times when we are much busier than others. Monday is always a very busy day, and best left to those with urgent conditions if possible. Mid-week is always quieter and Friday has a tendency to be busier.
Saturday is generally much busier than Sunday, but if you have a problem that can wait, a weekday appointment will probably be the best option for you. At weekends, we do not offer appointments but offer a walk-in clinic, and waiting times can vary.
Half of our doctors have school aged children, and therefore can only realistically take their annual leave in the school holidays. Whilst we have doctors away throughout the year, there will often be several away in the school holidays, and therefore less appointments available. If you have to come in on a regular basis it is much appreciated if you can avoid the school holidays, particularly the July ones and the weeks of Christmas and New Year.
We really appreciated your patience and understanding over these last July school holidays. Unfortunately, we had several doctors away and this was further compounded by staff sickness (a work hazard for us!). As mentioned in previous articles it is almost impossible to get locum doctors to cover leave anymore because of the chronic shortage of GPs in New Zealand. Many clinics have to close down nowadays when their staff take leave and we are very fortunate there are enough of us that we do not have to resort to this.
