For those eligible for a funded flu vaccination please call reception to make an appointment. You may have read in the press that the date from which we can give flu vaccines to those who are not eligible and wish to pay for them, has been pushed out. It is now the 28th of April.

Flu vaccinations 2020

We are anticipating that there will be no difficulty in persuading our at-risk patients to have a flu vaccination this year. Fortunately, the flu vaccinations have arrived early, and we are ready to start vaccinating those in the eligible groups. Please note, it gives no protection against Covid 19, but it may keep you out of hospital during a period where hospital beds are going to be a scarce resource.

Off to University? Don't take any risks.

Are you off to University next year? Whilst living in hall can be the best days of your life, it can also be a high-risk time for your health. Now is the time to check all your vaccinations are up to date and that you take advantage of the new offering to get protection against some strains of meningitis for free. Do not assume that your parents made sure you had all the vaccinations you need, there are some that are either newly available or that you may have missed at school especially if you are male.

Much to our horror there is a national shortage of flu vaccines. We are now being given a very limited stock and are only allowed to administer them to those most at risk of flu and who are therefore entitled to a free flu vaccination.

At last Pharmac have decided to protect the older members of our community and have funded a vaccine against shingles, Zostavax. Shingles is a nasty illness associated with a specific rash, most commonly seen in older adults. If you are aged between 65 years and 80 years book yours with the practice nurse.

Countdown to flu vaccinations

This year the vaccine is going to cover 4 strains of flu, rather than 3. It has been formulated to cover the H3N2 strain that has caused chaos in the northern hemisphere over their winter. The UK has nicknamed the deadly strain as Aussie Flu, and it is tipped to be the worst flu season in 20 years. The USA has also had a deadly flu season which has pushed their hospitals to breaking point.

Medplus has put together the following information to guide you, but we do welcome you to come in and discuss this with your GP. We do not carry all of these vaccinations in stock, but we can order in the vaccination for you if not. The prices are listed below and include the giving fee by the nurse. There is currently no funded immunisation against meningococcal disease.
